All Stars Project of Chicago - VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION HELPING CHICAGO YOUTH

All Stars Project, Inc (ASP) is a nationally-recognized, independently funded nonprofit organization bringing an innovative model of development to inner-city youth. The ASP seeks to empower and engage young people through a unique performance based approach.

I met the Director of ASP Chicago, David Cherry, last night during a volunteer information session. I learned during that session that ASP is heavily volunteer driven. David Cherry is the only paid staff person in Chicago all other positions are held by volunteers.

ASP believes that life is a performance. Whatever it is you do, you are performing. ASP Chicago was launched in 2007, currently offers tow outside-of-school programs for youth on the city's South and West sides.

All Stars Talent Show Network, young people 5-25 have the opportunity to produce and perform in talent shows within their own communities.

Development School for Youth (ages 16-21) learn the "performance" of the business world through workshops and internships sponsored by members of Chicago's business community.

Students attend a 10-week session of workshops on resume writing, professionalism etc at downtown business offices conducted by professional lawyers, accountants etc. After graduating from the session students are placed in a summer paid internship. The goal is not to steer students toward a career path but simply to expose them to the business world and allow them to learn how to present themselves, speak, and behave in the professional world.

This is a great program. ASP started off in the Bronx, NY over 20 years ago.
