Part 2: Education through Failure

Failure is a word that no one wants associated with anything they do. Everyone wants success on their side, and rightfully so. The problem is that we sometimes forget the purpose and power of failure.

• Failure shows us what does not work.
• Failure leaves a lasting sting so we can remember the lesson well & pass it on.
• Failure is what makes attaining success so great.
• Failure shows a trail of progress towards success
• Failure leads to new policy and procedures, that were otherwise not thought of.
• Failure, in enough doses , teaches us how to be humble when success comes.
• Failure helps us to cope with the losses in life (Hello Wall Street!)

I could go one but I rather tell the story of my nephew Anthony.

When Anthony was young, around 9 or 10, he wanted me to teach him how to play basketball. At that time I was around 28, standing 6'4 and weighing 200 lbs. My nephew stood about 5ft and weighing about 80 lbs. (while holding a 50 lb weight).

He used to say that he could not win because I was taller, I told him that I could only jump so high, but he could always shoot higher. 
 

Then I said, "I will teach you the first rule of playing basketball", he said "What is that?" as he was shooting the ball in the air. I jumped as high as I could and proceeding to smash the ball into the neighbors yard w"Own My Own"hile making a huge and spectacular event of the whole thing. 
 

Then I turned to him and said "How to lose, because winning is easy."

Today Anthony is in his 20's, pursuing his college degree, at his physical peak, stands 6'4" and is sure to surpass me soon. I am proud of the man he is becoming because failure doesn't deter him.
