TAKE CHARGE TUESDAYS ~ BOTTOM DOLLAR

When seeking employment, many if not all candidates are asked what is their expected salary or salary range.  As a Recruiter, I hear people say I am open, flexible, and negotiable.  That's is great an awesome.  Yes, the salary range question is a weed out question it is very important that you answer it accurately.

The first response to this question can go something like this "I meet and exceed the necessary skills, qualifications, and education background for this position so I would expect to be made an offer at the high end of the salary range for this position, what is the range for this position?" More than likely the Recruiter will openly answer that question because they 99.9% of the time have a pay range for the position.  Not once in that response did the person say they are open, flexible or negotiable.

I have had candidates tell me they will take anything, they just want to work.  WRONG ANSWER.  Not a deal breaker but its the wrong answer.  Why is this the wrong answer?  Everyone should have a bare minimum they will consider.  Only you know how much your bills are and what you need to live a life you choose.  So what is your bottom line dollar?

Many people have them and it saves the Recruiter and the candidate time.   If your minimum salary requirement is $40K and the max range for the position is $32K there is not point in wasting each others time.  So while it is a weed out question if you know your goal is to make $50K or $100K stick with that, write the vision make it plain, and go for it.

In short, make sure when you give a range that all numbers in the range are where you can live comfortably and enjoy life.  Don't just take a job with low pay and then you are unhappy because you can't make ends meet and are barely making it.  You gave the salary range and you accepted the position at that range.

Know your worth, price yourself properly, and be confident.  Better to still be seeking employment, than to be employed and still worried about how you are going to make ends meet.
