T.E.A.C.H. THURSDAYS ~ Are You Seeking A Mature Education?

Are You Seeking A Mature Education

When I first took on the task of writing for T.E.A.C.H. Thursday's I felt that it would be very simple.

What I did not expect is the welcomed intellectual challenge that presented itself as I took a real look at Education as far as how and what we learn.

Education is defined as: the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.

The words I want to focus on are; Acquiring, Developing and Preparing for a mature life. In some of our earlier blogs we touched on different ways to gain education, like through our experiences or by doing something as simple as read a book

But today we are going to talk about the kind of information that we take in. We live in the Age of Information, but with all the information that we take in on a day-to-day basis, how much or what percentage of it is helping us A/D/P for a mature life?

Let's do a general breakdown of the most common information sources today:

  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • G+
  • Cable/Satellite TV
  • Random Internet searches
  • Publications (books/magazines)

If you subscribe to any one of these sources then ask yourself "how will the content that I am taking in going to make me a better person?" Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a little relaxing down time, and aimless wondering about the internet, but what percentage is dedicated to that?

  • Is your YouTube time mostly spent watching videos about fights, singing animals or the latest dance?
  • Is your Internet search history going to tell stories of how your trying to develop your mind or how you are trying to numb it?

  • Is your Facebook/Twitter/G+ time mostly spent following someone else's life?
  • Is your TV time spent by putting your life on pause, to watch someone else live theirs? (aka Reality TV)
  • Is the book you are reading going to add value to your life by the time you complete it, or will it leave you the same way you were before you started it?

If so then you are not working towards building and developing a mature life for yourself.

I urge you to make a change in your lifestyle today so that you can build a better tomorrow for yourself and others.
