Was talking to a friend that used to be a life guard and he said something that was interesting, sad, yet makes a lot of sense.
"A drowning man in desperation will kill the person trying to save them!"
So as a life guard he was taught to bump the person first to kind of throw them off and then grab them or whatever to tow them along.
