TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR BUSINESS TUESDAYS ~ GO FOR IT

Starting Your Own Business

The 1st step is to get started. Now we know you are thinking well duh, why didn't I think of that but seriously getting started is the first step. In order to succeed in any endeavor you must first decide and then commit. Decide. Commit. Succeed!

Before starting a business answer these questions:
  • What is it that you are passionate about?
  • What is it that you would do whether or not you made money from it or not?
  • What is it that you would give all of your time, sweat, blood, and energy too?
Once you've answered those questions write your vision for your business and create a vision board. Review your vision and your vision board daily. Its a great reminder and motivating tool to not only pursue your dream but to make it a reality.

Create a timeline outlining what steps you will take to turn your idea into a business with specific completion dates.

Now I see you, you may be thinking to yourself all of this makes sense but where do you get started:
  • Research – research the industry you are interested in, find out who your competitors are, learn all there is possible to learn about your business. If you are creating something new that is like nothing around great, there are established companies out there that were the first in their industry, research those.
  • Find a mentor – find someone who is currently successful in your industry (that won't feel threatened) and ask them to mentor you.
  • Go online and find free small business services that may be provided in your area via your state , city, private and non-for-profit organizations
  • Create a business plan – there are countless websites (free and fee based) that are available to assist you with creating a business plan.
  • Funding – determine how much money $$$$ you will need to get started, if you have the start-up capital, if you will require a small business loan and/or investors. Also determine if you are ready to walk away from your full-time job. Black Enterprise posted this to Twitter on August 25thAre u thinking about leaving ur full-time job? • Market research – who/what is your target market, are they interested in the service/product you will be providing? Test it out, there are sites like the ones below that allow you to obtain survey data:
  • Taxes – DO NOT I repeat DO NOT forget about Uncle Sam visit the IRS website to discover more about taxes http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Starting-a-Business
